Captain’s Forum

 Dear Society Member

You will be aware I am taking over the Captaincy of the Society in January 2009.

There are a few things that I would like to change in my year and the reason for me writing to you

is to explain these changes, which I hope, will be of benefit to the society.

 Handicaps

It has long been muted that the society wishes to become a member of the Cambridgeshire Golf    Union.  The reason behind this is so that those of you who wish to play additional golf

Courses within the Cambridgeshire area can do so at half price.  The maximum handicap allowance to join the Union is 28 for men and 36 for ladies and juniors.  Unfortunately this will mean that those of you with handicaps above 28 will have them cut to 28 from January 2009.

Over the last couple of years the handicaps have been worked out from your staple ford scores.  This I believe has been unfair to a number of you, as handicaps for some individuals would have been reduced significantly if we had used the gross scores carded over the last year.  From January handicaps will be worked out on gross scores, which should see some other players winning competitions.

Membership

Currently the fee to play golf at Thorpe Wood is £19.50.  Generally this goes up by £0.75 pence per year, which will mean that the Society will be loosing £0.25 pence per person playing next year.  In the past we have increased the membership to allow for this increase but this year that cannot happen as the committee made a commitment to the Society in 2007 to keep the membership at £20 for two years.  The additional £0.50 from your green fees and the £20 membership was used to offset the Captains Day Golf and evening festivities.

Currently each month we give away £50 in prizes.  To alleviate the club loosing money I propose to reduce the number of prizes given out, but more on this later.

Monthly Format

I would like to change the format of the monthly meetings and have 4 competitions next year.  These will be in March, June (Captains Day), September and December.

I propose to play 4 different competitions.  These are:

  1. Foursome

This is where two players form a side and play alternate shots with one ball.  The two players drive alternately from successive tees.

  1. Four-ball better ball

Two players form a side, each playing their own ball throughout.  The score for each side is the better score of the two partners for each hole and then totalled at the end.

  1. Greensome

Two players form a side and both drive off each tee.  One of the drives is selected to continue the hole, and subsequent shots are played alternately until the hole is complete.  Minimum amount of drives per player chosen will be 6.

  1. Texas Scramble

Four players form a side and all players tee off.  One ball is selected and each player places their own ball within 6 inches of the chosen drive provided the drive chosen is on the fairway otherwise the ball is dropped.  Play continues like this until the ball is in the hole.  Minimum amount of drives per player chosen will be 3.

Detailed rules will be published for all to see on the website in due course.

To qualify for these competitions you must have played in at least one of the two preceding monthly society days.  This will stop players just turning up for the competitions and winning those prizes.

Where there is not a specific competition, players will play the normal 18 holes as we do currently to accrue staple ford points and the eclectic scorings. Prizes will be given at the end of the year for these competitions.  Prizes for the monthly meetings (not the 4 competitions above) will be awarded for the best net score (total score less handicap) £10, longest drive £5 and nearest the pin £5.  The money left over (£30 per month) will be used to present better prizes at the quarterly competitions mentioned above and to offset any losses that the society has lost due to our decision to keep the monthly fees and membership the same as last year.

 Vice Captain

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Alan Merry as my Vice Captain for next year.

 Website

As you know Terry has been doing the website for the past 12 months but has made it known to Roger that he would like to relinquish this responsibility.  Terry has done a wonderful job and I would personally like to thank him for his efforts.

With this in mind I have taken the liberty of asking a friend of mine to look at the website and where possible make some enhancements.

 Database

I would like to thank John Glanville for the thankless task of inputting all of the scores at the end of each month so quickly to provide the winners information and updating handicaps etc. and hope he will continue during my year as captain.

 Committee Meetings

I would like to have 4 committee meetings next year.  If there are any issues that you wish the committee to consider please contact me on 07742324205 or Roger at least two week prior to the meeting and we will make sure the issue is put on the agenda for the meeting.  The dates for the meetings are as follows:

10th February

12th May

11th August

10th November

Agendas will be set for these meetings in advance.

Additional meetings may need to be arranged where necessary to discuss details around competitions/Captains Day but I will try to keep these to a minimum.

Finally I would personally like to thank Ross for his sterling work and enthusiasm during his Captaincy year.
